Emiliano Grillo’s Ace On 16 Brings Beer Showers!

The Waste Management Open is one of the Top-5 best golf tournaments on the schedule every year. There, I said it; the raucous and unpredictable tournament held in Scottsdale, Arizona is a ‘bucket-list’ event for the casual golfer and beer aficionado.

Why do I believe that, you may ask? Well for one…

It’s because it’s home to one of the most OUT-OF-CONTROL holes in the history of golf. No. 16, also known as ‘The Coliseum,’ has really grown into a life of it’s own over the years. It has become THE hole to watch every year at TPC Scottsdale, one that fans will LITERALLY sprint to early in the morning, as if they were in the “running of the bulls” for drunk golf fans.

It’s just a special place for golf fans to come together, drink beer, and have a good time. It’s that ‘tailgate’ atmosphere that you get at most sporting events, but in a setting that’s normally more ‘prim and proper.’ It’s the part of golf where you can be like every other sports fan in the world; a rowdy degenerate who’s only goals are to have a great time, and to heckle some golfers.

You just have to LOVE IT……unless you’re a 60-year old stick in the mud who longs for the days of plaid pants and weird hats. The idea of teeing-off on 16 is one of the biggest dreams that a sports fan can have, and as someone who isn’t really a golfer…..I can safely say that I want to be a part of the madness.

I do, I really do. I’ve never played a round of golf in my life……but could you IMAGINE being Emiliano Grillo in that moment? Could you IMAGINE the roar of the crowd, and the sight of hundreds of beers being flung your way? THAT, my friends…..that’s a dream come true right there. That is a Top-5 moment that every sports fan DREAMS about, right below pitching a no-hitter in baseball, and hitting a buzzer-beater during March Madness.

It is ICONIC! Emiliano lived the dream in that moment, when he became only the 12th person since 1987 to ace the hole…….and I couldn’t be happier for him.

So congrats, good sir. That was a highlight that will live on forever. Thank you for helping to continue the great legacy of ‘The Coliseum’ with that legendary shot.

But in the end, as always……what do I know?  I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
