WWE Men’s Royal Rumble Preview
The Royal Rumble has taken place every year since 1988, and it’s no exaggeration to say that this may be the most stacked field ever.
The Rumble will air on Peacock this Saturday at 6 p.m.
Unlike other years in which only a few wrestlers seem to be real contenders, this year’s Rumble presents a host of possible winners and WrestleMania matchups.
Gunther is the current World champion, and Cody Rhodes will defend the WWE title against Kevin Owens in a ladder match.
Remember, the Elimination Chamber will take place on March 1, and that will mix up the possible WrestleMania bouts again.
Let’s take a look at some of the realistic contenders to win the men’s Royal Rumble.
John Cena
This will be the final year of competition for Cena, who is kicking off his retirement campaign with the Rumble match. At age 47, Cena needs to draw a late number.
If Cena wins, he will go on to WrestleMania and try to break the record of 16 World titles that he shares with Ric Flair.
CM Punk
Before Punk became a big star, my wife and I used to drive him and Colt Cabana to independent shows in Pittsburgh. He’s come a mighty long way.
One thing Punk hasn’t accomplished is an appearance in the main event of WrestleMania. He came close last year, but Cody Rhodes threw him out at the end of the Royal Rumble.
Logan Paul
This isn’t a joke. Even if you hate Logan Paul, you have to admit that he’s done an amazing job in his limited wrestling appearances.
The former US champion mentioned this week that he doesn’t have to throw 29 guys out of the ring … only one.
Roman Reigns
Reigns has been the “main character” in the WWE story for years. Entire feuds have been based on whether someone was Roman’s friend or foe.
If Reigns wins the Rumble, don’t expect a third straight WrestleMania match against Cody Rhodes. Reigns vs. Gunther would be an amazing matchup for the World title.
Jey Uso
“Main Event” Jey Uso had a brief run as Intercontinental champion last year. He could ride a huge wave of fan support to WrestleMania.
Sami Zayn
The ultimate underdog teamed with Kevin Owens to main event WrestleMania against The Usos two years ago. If Zayn wins the Rumble and Owens beats Rhodes, they will renew their rivalry at WrestleMania.
Other wrestlers announced for the men’s Rumble include Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, Bron Breakker, Shinsuke Nakamura, Penta, Carmelo Hayes, Chad Gable, and Rey Mysterio.
Jeff’s pick: CM Punk
