Back To Winning – Rangers End Of Season Press Conference Takeaways

Texas Rangers GM Chris Young and manager Bruce Bochy met with the media on Tuesday. Before the season started, they figured theyā€™d be meeting with the DFW press to talk about their 2024 playoff opener.

Unfortunately, that was not the case on Tuesday at Globe Life Field as Young and Bochy sat down to discuss their future plans after finishing the 2024 season at just 78-84.

ā€œOverall, obviously disappointed with the fact that we are here today and not competing in the playoffs,ā€ Young said. ā€œWe certainly didn’t expect that coming into the season, but understand for a number of reasons what contributed to the season we had. I think more than anything, as an organization, we’re excited to move on and remedy some of the issues we had this year.ā€

As for Bruce Bochy, heā€™s as committed as ever to getting Texas back into the postseason in 2025.

ā€œIā€™m still hungry to get back. Yeah, Iā€™m disappointed, just like all of us. Thatā€™s why I got back in the game,ā€ The four-time World Series champion manager said. ā€œā€œThatā€™s what drives me. Itā€™s still there, and thatā€™s where Iā€™m at right now. … Weā€™re working to get this thing back to where we want to be, and thatā€™s getting back to the postseason and winning the championship.ā€

Moving into the offseason, itā€™s clear that there wonā€™t be a huge influx of star free agents like there was prior to the Rangers’ 2023 World Series win.

Chris Young acknowledged that he will meet with ownership to discuss the payroll of the team for 2025 and beyond but internal upgrades will take priority in the Rangers improvement.

ā€œWe need Adolis [GarcĆa] to bounce back, we need Jonah Heim to bounce back, we need Leody Taveras to take the next step in his development. We need a healthy Josh Jung and Evan Carter.ā€

The big area of need for the Rangers this offseason will once again be in the bullpen. Young simply said, ā€œThe bullpen is an area we need to address.ā€

After having great seasons in 2024, David Robertson and Kirby Yates are both free agents as well as Jose Leclerc who will hit the open market for the first time in his career.

Something to watch for is whether Young in the front office will take the initiative to resign those guys or perform a near-complete bullpen makeover.

On the rotation side of things, it seems as if the Rangers will attempt to roll into 2025 with the same rotation they featured down the stretch this season.

Young referred to free agent starters Nathan Eovaldi and Andrew Heaney as ā€œprioritiesā€.
