3 Players the Raiders Should Bring Back for the 2025 Season
It truly is exciting times to being a Raiders fan. I am truly optimistic about the regime they’ve brought in and what’s to come from it. The Raiders might be bringing back winning football and that’s exciting to me. With that being said, the NFL Draft and free agency are right around the corner.
Of course the big headline is Myles Garrett and where he could land and as a fan, of course I want him wearing the Silver and Black. I doubt it happens, but a man can dream. But for now, let’s dive into what Raiders free agents they should bring back for the 2025 season.
Robert Spillane
All aboard the Spillane Train! For years, the Raiders have needed an anchor in the middle and someone who could hold down the linebacker position. The Raiders got that with Spillane.
Since he left the Steelers, Spillane has turned into quite the player for the Raiders. While he has been known as a stellar run defender, he had improved his coverage skills. Pretty nice the Raiders have finished inside the top 15 for defensive rankings since bringing him onboard. Coincidence? I think not.
He’s the definition of consistent. Spillane started all 17 games for the Raiders two seasons in a row. He finished with 158 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 10 pass breakups. He had ten more tackles this season than last season. Also, he’s had five sacks combined the last two years.
The best part about Spillane is his ability in the pass game. This is a player that had ONE interception across five seasons in Pittsburgh. He’s had five the last two years.
The Raiders finally found a solution at the middle linebacker position. Now it’s up to them to bring him back, cause I’m sure he will have value on the open market.
Malcolm Koonce
As a fan of this team, the one player I was looking forward to the most was Malcolm Koonce. With the addition of Christian Wilkins, seeing Koonce feast on the quarterbacks along side him and Maxx Crosby was going to be awesome. However, an injury derailed his season before it began, but there was a lot to love about Koonce.
Koonce has spent his three year career with the Raiders. He saw five games on action in 2022, but was a full time player in 2023. He did not record a single sack, but did get in on a few tackles. But then, he exploded in 2023 and you saw the true raw potential of this player.
Koonce had 32 tackles and nine of them going for a loss. He set a career high in sacks with eight and forced three fumbles. He emerged as a dependable player after the Raiders fired Josh McDaniels. Former head coach Antonio Pierce praised his development and labeled him as an x-factor on the defensive line.
Others around the league took notice on Koonce. Rob Ryan even talked about his development and expected him to take flight. The injury happened. But if I am the Raiders front office, I would be buying into Koonce and buying into his 2023 season and seeing what he could do further.
Tre’von Moehrig
If there is ever a glaring issue with the Raiders, it is the secondary. There have always been questions about it whether it’s the safeties or the corners. Welp, they drafted and have a stable presence with Moehrig.
Moehrig has slowly developed into a solid safety for the Raiders. In a year where they lost Mike Epps due to injury, he stepped up and patrolled the back end. Moehrig was also used heavily in the run game and being a solid run defender as a safety.
Moehrig finished with 104 tackles and five tackles for loss. He graded out at 87.5 for run defense, 70.1 for pass rush defense, and 54.4 overall. He is a player that has improved his play overall.
With Epps also being a free agent, the Raiders are going to need to figure out that part of the defense.
