2025 MLB Season Preview: Where Do The SF Giants Sit In The National League?
Buster Posey was an all-time great behind the plate for the San Francisco Giants during his playing career. He is not in the front office and looking to build the next great team in the Bay Area.
What Posey did was hand out the largest contract in franchise history. The Giants have went after the biggest free agents in recent years but have struggled to get player to take their money. That ended in a small way when Willy Adames signed a seven-year, $182-million contract in free agency. This was one top in the right direction for a franchise that will have a lot of rebuilding to do.
There was also change within the pitching staff. Both Blake Snell and Tanner Scott agreed to big contracts with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants took a chance on 42-year-old Justin Verlander on a one-year deal to join Logan Webb at the top of the rotation. The x-factor in this lineup is the health of Robbie Ray. The former Cy Young winner has the potential to return to form if he is healthy and if so, the top of the rotation is not a bad one. The Giants also moved Jordan Hicks into the rotation after he spent time as a closer in St. Louis.
Adames coming to town moves Tyler Fitzgerald to second base. This is an overall improvement for the infield as Fitzgerald’s arm fits better at second base. Matt Chapman decided not to opt out of his contract and returned to San Francisco, giving the team a Gold Glove option at the hot corner. He will be at the top of the lineup along with Jung Hoo Lee and LaMonte Wade.
The Giants will not be players in the NL West this season due to the incomplete roster and the loaded nature of the division but there is some intriguing pieces to build around for the future.

Record Prediction
The schedule is difficult for the Giants out West with the likes of the Dodgers and San Diego Padres. The key for the Giants is health. If Ray is healthy and the lineup stays together at the top, the team could flirt with 80 wins. The National League as a whole is difficult to navigate and San Francisco will need some more work in the future to be true contenders.
Final Record: 79-83
