2025 MLB Season Preview: New York Yankees Looks To Avoid Regression

The New York Yankees enter as one of the most intriguing teams in the league this season.

Will the team be the one that made a run to the World Series last season or suffer the effects of losing Juan Soto in the offseason. The Yankees ran through a weak American League last season and lost its best postseason player in free agency.

Aaron Judge is coming off an MVP campaign in 2024 but struggled mightily once again in the postseason. Surrounding Judge is a few questions marks in the lineup.

It begins with Paul Goldschmidt. He signed a one-year deal in free agency and is looking to revitalize his career in the Bronx. Goldschmidt was one of the big additions in the offseason, along with Cody Bellinger. The injury bug has hit the Yankees during spring training and it has severely impacted the team in many ways.

Gerrit Cole underwent Tommy John surgery and will miss the 2025 season. This will take away one of the most reliable pitchers in the league. Now, Max Fried and Carlos Rodon will have to step up, meaning stay healthy and be productive. In the lineup, Giancarlo Stanton will be out for the foreseeable future. The DH position will now be a major hole with Ben Rice and Dominic Smith fighting for a spot. That is not desirable for a team looking to win a championship.

Jasson Dominguez is among the major question marks. Aside from being a butcher in left field during the spring, we do not know what he is at the plate. Dominguez is widely regarded as the future by fans but he has not been able to stay healthy and we do not know what he can do consistently.

This is a strange spot for the Yankees to be in preseason but they are still the Yankees and will find a way into the postseason, right?

Record Prediction

The Yankees were led by Juan Soto in the two hole ahead of Aaron Judge last season. Now, the protection is gone. While it won’t impact Judge’s ability to produce, the loss will impact the Yankees more than one might realize. The pitching staff is strong and will be the leader of the team this season. It is hard to imagine the Yankees completely falling off the shelf but to make another run to the World Series, a lot will have to go right.

Final Record: 92-70
