2025 MLB Season Preview: New York Mets Look To Build Off NLCS
The window is now open for the New York Mets.
Owner Steve Cohen made the biggest splash of the offseason by adding Juan Soto on a mega, 15-year contract. The Mets have made an impactful signing that shows the team is interested in winning World Series. After a trip to the NLCS last season, the time is now in a difficult National League.
Soto now joins Francisco Lindor in Queens. Lindor was the runner-up to the NL MVP award in 2024 and has become a true leader for the Mets. It is a rock-solid infield for the Mets anchored by Lindor. Mark Vientos looks like a blossoming star at third base after rite campaign he put together last season. The Mets also brought back Pete Alonso at first base. After tough negotiations, the two sides came to an agreement but it was a deal that benefits the Mets in the short term.
Jeff McNeil suffered an injury that will keep him sidelined for weeks into the season. This will give young players a chance at second base, starting with Brett Baty and potentially Luisangel Acuna.
In the outfield, Soto and Nimmo are experienced options that are still playing at a high level. The Mets added Jose Siri in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays and he will get a chance to start. Siri will likely platoon with Tyrone Taylor but it is expected that he will be the top option.
The biggest question mark for the Mets is in the rotation. This was the same case last year and it worked out well. David Stearns is not willing to sign pitchers to long-term deals so it leads to the likes of Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes, who was recently named the Opening Day starter. Montas is on the shelf to begin the year. Kodai Senga and David Peterson are looking to build off successful seasons. For Senga, it was his rookie year in 2023 before suffering an injury last year.
At full strength, the Mets have a chance to do something special once again this season.

Record Prediction
The Mets came out of nowhere last season and earned one of the Wild Card spots in the National League. They rode this wave all the way to the penultimate round of the postseason. Now, with a newly-signed Juan Soto, the Mets are back with a chance to compete once again. There is a chance that the Mets make another deep run if injuries can hold off during the dog days of the year.
Final Record: 91-71
